Pakistan’s 5G Commercial Launch Date Confirmed After Multiple Delays

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is facing several hurdles in conducting the 5G spectrum auction, which has led to repeated delays. As per the latest updates, the auction is expected to take place by June 2025, while the commercial rollout of 5G services is anticipated in early 2026.

According to PTA documents, consultants have completed a telecom market assessment, and discussions on telecom reforms with stakeholders are ongoing. The auction process is now at the stage of spectrum pricing and auction design, and an advisory committee is set to submit policy recommendations to the government within a month. Once approved, the government will issue a policy directive to proceed with the auction.

One of the primary causes of delay is the pending merger of two telecom companies, which has created uncertainty in market dynamics. Additionally, legal disputes over key 5G spectrum bands are further slowing down the process. Cases related to the 2600 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 1800 MHz bands remain unresolved, with a 140 MHz dispute in the 2600 MHz band, a 6.6 MHz case in the 1800 MHz band, and a 10 MHz dispute in the 2100 MHz band still awaiting decisions in court.

Beyond regulatory challenges, high infrastructure costs and limited availability of 5G-compatible devices pose additional barriers. However, despite these difficulties, the introduction of 5G technology is expected to significantly enhance data speeds and service quality, while also strengthening the IT sector in Pakistan.

The launch of 5G services is expected to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), boost economic growth, and create new job opportunities. The technology will transform multiple industries, including education, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and governance. Additionally, 5G is expected to improve e-governance, disaster management, and digital infrastructure in the country.
